... A Traveller's Survival Guide ...
Holiday season is here
and many of us have started booking flights to tropical destinations and doing “holiday
shopping”, trying to find the perfect bathing suit and straw hat.
Therefore, it is
essential that this time of year we don’t make any irrational choices. A trip requires
planning beforehand in order to have the best holidays that you can have. I am
not trying to kill your mojo but grabbing a bag and fly to the cheapest
destination expecting to have the time of your life usually doesn’t go well.
I have prepared a guide to
help you through it and do the right steps for a care free vacay.
Organizing is
key
Try and pick a
destination that you really like and make it a goal. Decide a few months prior
to the trip where your destination is going to be and check the tickets for the
flight so that you can have an idea of a budget.
Lists will be
your friends
Make a list of all the
things you want to do when you get there. Do you want to go sightseeing? Go to
the bar with the nice cocktails? Go to that beach that someone suggested?
Whatever it is, write it down and find a rough estimate of how much it is going
to cost you.
Decisions
Now you have to decide
whether you want to go on a fancy hotel or go camping. What type of holidays
have you always dreamed of? Don’t be scared to try out new things.
See what the area you are
visiting has to offer and make the best choice considering factors like
weather, food, nature and animals, transportation from where you’re staying
etc.
Destination
Are you going to see one
place? Maybe you want to visit multiple places in one country and then staying
in one accommodation is going to be challenging. I would suggest either camping
or booking hostels and renting a car to go from one place to the next. It can
be challenging trying to book everything in advance but trust me it feels so
good when you see all these places and experience the same culture from
different sides.
Pack smart
Before you start packing
it is essential that you check the weather for the period of time you are going
to be staying there. The amount of times I woke up in a tropical place and it
was raining and cold. Lesson learned! If you are doing extreme sports think,
what you will be wearing then. Same goes for sea sports, climbing or trekking.
You never forget packing
your trainer boots again, after you go trekking in sandals. Trust me!
Documents
Print out whatever needs
printing and put everything that you will need in a folder neatly. Passport,
Visa, Hotel bookings, Plane tickets etc.
Entertainment
I know you are on
holidays and you want to suck the magic that the place you are visiting has to offer,
but chances are at least one of the days you will want to go home soon because
the next morning you have a stupidly early tour and you are just plain tired.
Make sure to download
some tunes and a couple of your favorite films or series to watch and entertain
yourself. They also help if you have a long flight!
Signal lost
Make sure you have a map
and a gps on your phone. I am not talking about google maps, no, I am talking
about something that does not require a wifi connection. I have been lost in
the middle of nowhere with no signal, therefore no internet, and had to wander
around for a good 2 to 3 hours before I see a living soul. Get yourself a gps or
a map!
Don’t forget
your book
Kind of the same with the
music and the movies.
You need to have
something to entertain yourself and there are times where I personally don’t want
to ruin a beautiful sound of a forest or the beach with music and people
talking in a tv. That’s where I choose to read a book. Get something light and
easy to read!
The
unexpected
It is very important to
remember that sometimes even if you have planned everything, some things just
don’t go as planned. Everything is not in the reach of our palm and there are
some things we can not control.
Make sure you have good
company and that you keep an open mind to changes and see everything as a
possibility to experience a new feeling.
